Census of RRR and RRRR circular date stamps on Tas Pictorial
Census of RRR and RRRR circular date stamps on Tas Pictorial
The RRR and RRRR cds on Pictorials census - phase 2 - on line
In The Courier No 11, March 1990, Tony Orchard commenced a census of the scarcer Circular Date Stamps on Tasmanian Pictorials. The census extended over a number of years and all then known types were recorded. The listing of scarcer strikes was thought to be reasonably complete. Alas the Census was not continued beyond the 1990s.
The TPS web site presents an opportunity to revive this census and make the results easily available to TPS members on-line. How many strikes might exist of the rarest CDS ? How does the quality vary from post office to post office ? What prices are being realised at auction ? These are some of the more obvious questions that a revival of the census might help to answer.
The original Courier census images will be progressively up-loaded onto a Members section of the TPS web site starting in July 2009. As many new examples as can be found from collections and auction catalogues will be added to the existing black and white images originally published.
Can you help ? If you have any of the 3R and 4R cds on Pictorials you assistance in adding these to the web site would be welcomed. Just contact Peter Allan via this Bulletin Board - use the private message facility(the little 'PM' icon on the top right of this message) or add a post to this Topic.
Ideally I'd like good quality scans sized to 200 pixels in width, but if you don't know how/haven't got time to do this, just let me know and I'll be happy to assist.Complete privacy is assured. If you have any comments, suggestions or questions please don't hesitate to get in touch.

TEEPOOKANA / FE 5 02 / TASMANIA - rated RRRR
You can load up images of RRR or RRRR rated postmarks for the census on this thread - the Administrator or myself can then transfer the images to the TPS website.

Re: Census of RRR and RRRR circular date stamps on Tas Pictorial
Dave,
The article in Courier Number 11 of 1990 doesnt say very much except to introduce the concept of an on-going listing, with images, of as many 3R and 4R strikes as could be found. The article then shows stikes in alphabetical order from Allonah to Ellerslie. For the next few years The Courier then continued the listings. As the on-line Census will include all of the original strtikes(scans of the origianl black and white pictures )plus as many new ones as we can find its prtobably not a lot of help to re-publish the Courier article in its original form. The introduction doesnt shed much light on the higher rated strikes, its the images that are the useful part.If youd like a copy I'd be happy to send you a PDF though - just send me an email via the Bulletin Board .
I think that images for the first 15 Post Offices will be up on the TPS Memebers section of the web site within a fortnight. I'll send you a password and log-on ID as soon as its up.
One thing to note is that the original census included anything listed as 3R or 4R in either of the two 'Green Books' or in Lancaster. We've taken the view that the Lancaster ratings are the most recent and only listed 3R and 4R as per Lancasters list.

CHRISTMAS HILL / 3-JAN.07 / TASMANIA (Type 2) - rated RRR
Seen on eBay as part of larger collection c.2005 - purchaser unknown.
[sorry about the size of the image but this was taken from the eBay website when listed]

Re: Census of RRR and RRRR circular date stamps on Tas Pictorial
GLAZIERS BAY / 40-SEP.08 / TASMANIA - Type 2 is rated RRRR
This example was seen as part of an accumulation of postmarks offered on eBay c.2005
I believe the purchase price was in the $2500-$3000 and it is now "resident" in one of the
major collections. [image quality poor as this was taken from the eBay site at the time]
This was a "new discovery". P.S. the year may be '06' rather than '08' .... perhaps the
owner may be able to confirm?

Re: Census of RRR and RRRR circular date stamps on Tas Pictorial
SPRINGS / 11 DE 1912 / TASMANIA - rated RRRR
One of the few examples with a 1912 date. It is not known whether this strike has ever
been offered for sale and may be a "new discovery".
Re: Census of RRR and RRRR circular date stamps on Tas Pictorial
Re the Glaziers Bay there was a short note in The Courier at the time concerning the discovery and realization.

VERONA / 31.SEP.06 / TA[SMANIA] - Type 2 is rated RRR
and yes, the date definitely reads September 31st ... they must have really
enjoyed that month at Verona in 1906!
Sold for AU$60 on the TSA Online Store ..... sorry that you missed out
at that bargain price but it had been there for many months!
