Luis, you are correct - these postmarks are indeed Crotty and Newstead.

P.S. a tip for future assistance with identification, it's always useful to place the stamp with the town name at the top of your image as we can't rotate it on the BB.

Looks like GEEVES TOWN to me.
Not rated but on the harder to find bright lilac shade of the 2d Pictorial found in late 1910

Yes, the Campbell book says that GEEVESTOWN had a Type 1a date-stamp. The earliest date being 14.8.97. The GEORGE TOWN had a Type 1 date-stamp and GLEN HUON did not open until 1911. So it must be GEEVESTOWN. Luis M.

It's ST HELEN'S and the year of use is most likely to have been 1912 (the ONE PENNY surcharge
was first issued in October of the same year).

There seen to be two post marks here. The hand stamp on the right is Devonportr West. I cant understand what a Newstead postmark is doing on a Devonport West marking ??

Hi Luis,
you have a type 1c here. Its similar to Type 1, but the year is in 4 integers instead of two. This type is only seen for Launceston and Hobart, as far as I am aware, and often has a code letter, as does yours, at the top ( the "L") . I am not sure of the latest theories regarding the meaning of code letters, but one hypothesis is that they represented the time of day the stamp was used. Others may have a better explanation, however, to date, there has been no definitive explanation of the use of the various codes. You might want to collect the various different letter codes for these hand stamps - you will find there are a number, and they are not difficult to pick up. You will also see "PR" which stands for Pillar Box Reciever, ie, the letter was posted in a metal pillar box and collected and taken to the Post Office where it was postmarked.
We (the TPS) really should get something on our website by way of a guide to the various types. There are only three basic types of post marks found on the Pictorials, along with a few subtypes for each. Will see if I can dig something up and post it.

Thanks for your very informative reply Pete. I have a chart (PDF file) that identifies the different types of postmarks of Tasmanian pictorials. I suspected that the Hobart postmarks were different because I couldn't ID (using my chart) the specific type of postmark on the stamp I posted. Luis M.

One of the postmarks (most likely Newstead) is probably a transit marking. I have seen many re-directed postcards where, due to a lack of space,
the re-directing office has applied their datestamp very close to or over much of the stamp so as not to obstruct the writing.

The circular datestamps used at Hobart (and Launceston) are very complex and many collectors have specialised in just this field.

The illustration below has been taken from Part I of "Tasmanian: the Postal History & Postal Markings" (Purves et al) and provides
information about the various Hobart Type 3 cds postmarks (please note that the various "typing" of Hobart and Launceston postmarks
does not tie in with that used for all other offices (i.e. Types 1, 2 & 3 with various sub-types). Hobart cds types used up until 1912 go up
to Type 6 and Launceston to Type 9.

As mentioned previously by Peter, we'll try and get a resource article about these postmarks on to the TPS website in the not too
distant future.

Second hand copies of Part I & II of "Tasmanian: the Postal History & Postal Markings" become available through auctions on a fairly regular basis in
Australia so it is a good idea to keep a lookout for them as they are invaluable references, especially for all the Hobart and Launceston postmarks.

I'd still put any Hobart and Launceston cancels aside though .... somewhere down the track when you have accumulated
a few hundred of them you may wish to have another look. There are still some "discoveries" to be made in my opinion and modest to
large sized accumulations of Hobart and Launceston cancels do come on to the market on a fairly regular basis.

Hi Josto,

An extensively updated listing of the second allocation barred numerals has been completed (with rarity ratings)
and will be published in The Courier over the next three issues. It is planned to include a simple checklist of
rarity ratings for all the BN's as part of the first instalment as we understand that such a listing is eagerly
awaited and we don't want to make everyone have to wait 12 months for all the rarity listings to be published.

A detailed rarity listing will be included in the third and final instalment.

The next edition of The Courier will be published in full colour in June so will not have long to wait. To obtain a copy
all you have to do is become a member of the Tasmanian Philatelic Society. It's AU$20 per annum (+$1 if you use Paypal
to pay your membership fee) and for that modest sum, you will receive two copies of The Courier by airmail and access to
the "members only" section of the Tasmanian Philatelic Society website

I`ll have a look at that! It`s just because I never really collected Tsamania consequent, just if something fell into my hands from lager collections, I stored it in a stockbook. So I don`t have many numeral postmarks. These are the ones I have:

on chalons:

1,16,34,51,52,60,64,69,74,77,80,84

on sidefaces:

4,24,33,34,36,37,42,45,51,53,62,79,83,84,87,94,95,120,144,178,221,311

on 1892 Victoria:

59

on pictorial:

Is there anything with a rating within those?

Hi Josto,

I've moved your posts over to this topic which is more suited for general
inquiries about postmarks.

can you post an image of the following please?

on chalons: 60,80

on sidefaces: 33,79,120,144,311

on pictorial: 321

all of these are rated between R and RRR but clarity and completeness are very important
as is correct identification. The number "3" can be misread for "8" or vice versa and so on.
Also, the "60" is probably a first allocation BN ... if it's a 2nd allocation it is rated RRRRR.

You can attach an image to your reply i.e. you don't have to use "Photobucket" or suchlike
on the TPS BB.
