Can anyone help with this strike? I thought it would be a common (probably) parcel postmark on an attractive pair of SG 212, and bought it as such, but I can't find it in Part 2 of "Cancellations 1913-88" by Avery and Hardinge.

It's a town die from part of a machine cancel ...one more 2/- stamp to the right and some of the slogan would have been included. Avery and Hardinge only list handheld datestamps.

Thanks, Ross. Duly noted for the future! Roger

An extensive listing of the Tasmanian machine cancellations was publised in The Courier No. 45, June 2008.

Has anyone seen this AUSTRALIA POST HOBART TASMANIA 7000 neoprene-faced datestamp used before?

Re: POST 1912 DATESTAMP INQUIRIES - ASK QUESTIONS HERE !!
The Williamsford PO closed on 18 JUNE 1976 and this example of the Type 5(s) cds is on a "last day cover"

Although the impression is extra clear, the "month" in the dateline is absent except for two tiny black marks that do not appear to be
part of the letters 'J' or 'U'. Does anyone have any examples of this postmark from this period (i.e.May/June 1976) where the "month"
was clearly impressed or is "month missing" the normal state for all late impressions??

My only example of this cds is a couple of years earlier but there is weakness in the month area of the date line.
The first letter of the month has not registered and a very feint Y shows as the second.
Could the detereoration have started earlier?

Re: POST 1912 DATESTAMP INQUIRIES - ASK QUESTIONS HERE !!
I have just found this impression of PAID AT HOBART · ----4JA52(?) · TAS struck in red ink.

As there is no 'stop' after TAS, it appears to be one of the three Type 4R datestamps.
In addition to the problem of working out which of the three PAID datestamps this is, there
are three more to be found 1) none of the Type 4R datestamps have been recorded struck in red
ink, 2) the latest recorded date for any of the three cds is -8 JU 1933 and 3) could this be an example
of the Tpe 4aR where the 'dot' after TAS has not impressed?
Can anyone solve this puzzle for me?
P.S. yes, I realise that it is unlikely that a red cancellation would be found with a 1952 date so I
may be wrong in that assumption (thus the ?), however, the questions remain the same.

Hi Ross,
Here is another example of the TAS no stop handstamp struck in red.
The date is not entirely clear, best guess is 17 10 (4)9

Can anyone help with this LINDA datestamp Type 4a dated 8OC53 with an inverted "5"
This is not listed by Hardinge, but may actually be the norm
Any comments please?

Hardinge states that this postmarker used Violet ink for 1991.
This would appear to be late usage, but have others seen this year with Violet ink?

Re: POST 1912 DATESTAMP INQUIRIES - ASK QUESTIONS HERE !!
ANTILL PONDS RLY STN 30NO37.
This postmark has had the "30" manuscript cancelled, presumably to correct the missing "30" on the datestamp
I was wondering whether this is a constant correction and whether anyone else has seen this variant.
OR has it been hand corrected the once and a new slug put into the canceller.
It is likely that there are other cancels where the missing 30 has not been noted and therefore with a blank day.
Any thoughts ?

These were commonly done as the "type for the office were either lost or damaged.

Help !! I have a HOBART / TAS-AUST postmark dated "4-P-5JA90"
but no postcode as I would have expected in 1990.
Perusing Avery and Hardinge the likely identification is either 5sT (dates given as 1961-1979)
or R6b "Tas Aust" at base. but again dates do not fit (1968-1974. It does look like a rubber postmark however.
Any ideas please.

Hi Max
it's definitely a Type 5sT steel datestamp and not a rubber/neoprene-faced datestamp.
I'll leave it up to JH to provide the taxonomy
cheers ... Ross
P.S. it is possible to edit any of your posts at any time so if you omit an image or would like to add something
to an already submitted post, open it, hit the edit button and away you go....! Also you can add up to 10 images in a single
post so you don't have to submit say 3 postmarks in 3 separate posts.

Query early or late usage of PROSPECT 23 AUG 1991, or a new variety.
I appreciate that all four listed examples are of variations on the R6 post marker, however
these are in two pairs a) "P of Prospect almost touching frame" and b) Prospect aligned with frame.
My example has the "T" of Prospect almost touching the frame. Also my date is midway between the two pairs
hence either early or late. Any thoughts please?

RELIEF No.3 · TAS-AUST used at MAYDENA - early date 29JY57 · late date on envelope (with address in identical handwriting) 18OC57
Cover with earlier postmark endorsed "Maydena (P.O. Burnt recently)"
I also found about another five similar envelopes with postmarks dating from the interim period.
There is a 'problem' here that warrants investigation.
While the late date for the Type 5 cds is fine, the current ERD for the Type 5s as 31MY57 is possibly an error as I believe that the
post office was razed during late June/early July 1957 (unfortunately, copies of The Mercury from this period cannot be viewed online using Trove)
and the Type 5 cds destroyed at that time.
Can anyone provide an early date of use for the Type 5s datestamp prior to October 18th, 1957?

Devonport "Money Order Counter" Type R7
Hardinge lists this item under "Money Orders" and states that the text reads "Money Order Teller/Devonport Tas 7310
Do I have an unlisted postmark or is the text on the postmark misstated?

More of an announcement rather than an inquiry!
MENGHA · 30JE75 · TAS-AUST - Type 5(s) on a "Last Day Cover"
John's master list indicates that closing day (and LRD) was 17 MAR 1975 whereas "The Post Offices of Tasmania" (1996)
indicates a 30 JUN 1975 closure, confirmed by this cover.
Please adjust your lists.

Re: POST 1912 DATESTAMP INQUIRIES - ASK QUESTIONS HERE !!
I am trying to identify the following two postmarks from Hobart.
As far as I can make out they are Type 7aT, but there the problem begins as they are both "SD" which according to Hardinge's dates make this a very late usage. (LD 7 June 1982). The 7aT(ii) dates from 25 Feb 1986 - IU 1994, but the notes state that the "SD" has been removed.
I cannot see what else they could be. Note that the second example has the "S" reversed.
