LONGLEY CDS
After collecting Pictorial CDS for the past two years I thought it was about time to "sort out" my Sideface and Tablet CDS. Thanks to joining TPS and their happy band of mentors I was able to discern that in amongst my "Longford" Sideface CDS was something "different". Further examination showed it was not a "Longford" due to the solid stop. Thnks to John Hardinge's volume of work on CDS that I was able to reference it appeared to be an early "Longley", but not within the time frame already known. Date of the CDS was 5 FE 85.
I referred it to Kim at the Stamp Place and it did the rounds to Ross at TSA and John Hardinge.
I am thrilled to be able to share an early Longley, which I am sure will raise many questions. Thanks Kim, Ross and John.

Well found John!
Here is some further information courtesy of John Hardinge:
This datestamp is definitely RRRRR rated in this period.
It's always worth checking our postmark holdings - just recently I found a nice example of
NORFOLK NORTH (Type 5 rated RRR on telegram piece) in a packet into which I had shoved
a whole lot of NEW NORFOLK cds postmarks, all of which are very, very common!

Re: RECORD NEW EARLY & LATE POSTMARK DATES, etc. HERE
Not another new early or late date but interesting...
Last year, TPS BB member John Campton reported a LONGLEY cds with an 1885 dated cds
see ... http://tps.org.au/bb/viewtopic.php?f=9& ... 4570#p4187
Earlier today, I came across this undated example on an imperf 2d QV Chalon which
I believe 'dates' from the same period (i.e. as used at Lower Longley until the PO received a correctly
named datestamp c.1892.)

Re: RECORD NEW EARLY & LATE POSTMARK DATES, etc. HERE
I picked up this cover from Tas Postal Auctions recently. The HOBART TOWN arrival backstamp dated 13 July (18)77 is quite a bit later than the Green Books (part II, p62 - 8.8.76).

Re: RECORD NEW EARLY & LATE POSTMARK DATES, etc. HERE
Should look at the collection a bit more often. This one has been sitting there very quietly minding its own business for some time. Recorded early use date for Stirling is 7.10.1900 with the post office opening on 1.10.1899. This 1d has a date of 2.10.1900 which only shaves 5 days off the EUD so there must be earlier use dates out there.

Re: RECORD NEW EARLY & LATE POSTMARK DATES, etc. HERE
Just spotted recently but was unsuccessful in acquiring. While just the front cover of the envelope the Waddamanna Type 3 has the date of 30th August 1913 against the earliest known use date of 22nd September 1913.
John Hardinge advises that this cds was ordered on 18th August 1913 so this new early use date will be hard to beat. In case you are wondering who "The Priscilla Publishing Company" in Boston are they provided knitting and sewing patterns and the like. Most likely one of the wives of senior staff of Gillies company the "Hydro Electric Company" at the new site at Waddamana sent for a pattern to ease her boredom in the highlands. The Tasmanian Government took over Gillies company in 1914. For the full tale have a look at the December 2018 Courier "Waddaman and Kanna Leena".
