Re: BOOK: THE POST OFFICES & THEIR DATESTAMPS by J. HARDINGE - report updates here!
The closure date for REDPA has always been listed as being August 30th 1987
This cover and letter has just landed on my desk
Please note the PM's note on the requesting letter indicating that the REDPA post office actually closed on Friday, August 28th 1987 due to there being
a public holiday on Monday 31st (the advertised closure date) ..... August 30th that year was a Sunday and was always unlikely to be the last day of operation.
Yes, there are 'discoveries' still to be made ....if you make one, please post your information in this thread!

Possible ERD correction required for New Norfolk Type R6 f.d.i. canceller current listed as being 13Apr1970
I just came across this while tidying my desk....
Certified date on this cover is 31Aug1970 is quite compelling evidence that the current recorded ERD is an error.

This "football" f.d.i. canceller used at HOBART BATHURST STREET appears to have been omitted from the listing.

CORRECTION:
This last day cover with a clear strike of the LONGLEY LOWER Type 8aT cds dated 22JA93 indicates that the currently listed
date of closure for this office (i.e. 31DE92) is most likely to be incorrect.

Here is a new 'late date' for the KOOMEELA manuscript cancel ......dated 11-8-14. Current LRD is 1-8-14 ...... as this item is from the Avery Collection
it's possible that current date is a typo (i.e. '1' instead of '11' ....not an error you would pick up easily proof reading!)

New Rosebery Paid cds.
In the following three images the top image dated 6.4.90 ( cover BP Ian Mahony)is that of the known Type 7b Paid Rosebery which has an early use date of 9.10.1979 and a late use date of 2.1.1995. Found in red ink 1979 - 91 and black ink thereafter.
The bottom cover from the same establishment has a timed paid cds. Dated 5-P-2NO90 it falls within the use period of the T7b but the time is in larger figures. Not recorded I would assume this may be T7bT.
Confirmation that this T7bT was not a one off the last image is of the new Rosebery T7bT (if I am allowed to suggest a cds type) dated 5-P-1NO91. In black ink and with the time 5 P again in larger figures than the remainder.
The question raised is were two different Rosebery Paid cds in use post November 1990.

Rosebery Paid R8T
Given the last post on the Rosebery Paid cds I have scoured my collection for supporting data/images. But I turned up something else. The Rosebery Paid R8T cds has an early use date of 1.5.1996 coinciding with the possible phasing out of the Rosebery Paid T7b which has a late use date of 2.1.1995.
The following two images of the R8T, one a clipping and the other on cover, dated 6 SEP 1995 and 29 NOV 1993 respectively, show that this cds was in use much earlier than known. Both are earlier use dates than that recorded, one is over two years earlier than the recorded early use date.
The time overlap would prima facie indicate that the R8T and T7b were both in use at the time. Again this raises the question, as raised in the last entry on the Rosebery Paid T7b and new T7bT, "were two, or then three paid cds in operation at the same time at different parts of that post office". In the first instance the T7b and T7bT, and then the T7b, T7bT and R8T.
Only additional supporting images will confirm this so all you west coast collectors have a look at your collections.

1966 (July 8th): full clear impression of PAID AT GLENORCHY Type 5R cds on piece rated 3R · this is a new LRD but that's not all ....the ERD for the Type 5(s) cds (i.e. the same datestamp with a small dateline) is currently 29 April 1966 which can't be right unless there is a date error on either postmark impression.

WATTLE GROVE - text correction and a clarification
correction to remarks column for Type 5s ....should read "PO was not reopened" or "did not reopen"
clarification needed for rating and remarks columns which state currently that the datestamp has NOT YET (BEEN) SEEN "NYS" yet in the remarks column it is stated "A sample strike ex PMG archives is known"
therefore the rating should be 5R as one strike exists BUT if the remark is changed to "has been reported" (i.e. not empirically verified) no change to the rarity rating would be necessary.

The East Devonport Type 4a cds (reported use dates 6.10.1935-8.8.1968) is recorded as "Type 4 is 4a with dot not showing". I may be ignorant here but I think this refers to the dot after "TAS".
The example shown on a telegram piece has a dot showing after "TAS". Can anyone enlighten me please

Re: BOOK: THE POST OFFICES & THEIR DATESTAMPS by J. HARDINGE - report updates here!
This may have just been a typo in the book however the first day of use of the NEWNHAM Type R6(iii) is currently listed as being July 16th 1984.
I was just sorting through some of my covers today and discovered this....
I assume that error in the book is just a typo and this is not a real discovery as first day of use covers were made by yours truly on July 2nd (the first day of use of the new '7248' postcode)
The ERD for the R6(ii) cds is also given as being July 16th ..... unfortunately I must have disposed of my example 'on cover' so I can't check to see if the actual first day of use was July 2nd also.
If you have an example of the Type R6(ii) can you please confirm here that my assumption is correct

These Bathurst Street Hobart "football" f.d.i. datestamps were omitted from the Datestamp Compendium ......can you assist with a earlier or later date of use?
